Who is James Turrell?

Since the 1960s, Turrell has used light as his medium. He is a major figure of the Southern California Light and Space movement. The gallery describes a body of work that runs from sculpted, seemingly solid blocks of pure light to rooms awash with slowly modulating light and architectural structures that frame the ever-changing sky.

Each piece offers an immersive, contemplative environment that turns your attention to the act of seeing itself. In a 2005 conversation with Almine Rech, reprinted in the press release, Turrell traces this back to his Quaker upbringing: “encounter silence in the service,” as he puts it, and “going inside to greet the light.”

This is Turrell’s thirteenth solo exhibition with Almine Rech in more than three decades of working together. According to the gallery’s press release, it is also his first exhibition with the gallery in the United States.

The presentation brings together additions to what the gallery calls landmark bodies of work: a new Shallow Space, new pieces from the Glassworks series and a new Cross Corner work. The gallery frames them as a continuation of Turrell’s exploration of space and light, and as an invitation to pay close attention to your own senses.

Almine Rech organized Turrell’s first gallery exhibition in Europe in 1989, presenting a Light Piece titled Blood Lust at her Paris gallery. The New York space at 361 Broadway is the gallery’s new U.S. flagship, in Tribeca.

Almine Rech is a commercial contemporary art gallery: a private gallery that represents artists and sells their work. Like most commercial galleries, it is free to visit and open to anyone during gallery hours.

How can context shape the visit?

Turrell’s installations ask for time more than explanation. A useful way in is to treat your own perception as the subject: notice the moment when a wall of colored light stops reading as a wall. Giving a work that kind of attention is close to what Antre calls cultural mediation – enough context for each visitor to form their own reading. Antre’s own term, adaptive cultural mediation, describes how that context can adjust to what each person already knows.

How should you plan the visit?

Entry is free and no reservation is required. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-6pm, at 361 Broadway in Tribeca.

The opening reception on November 12 falls inside the first Art Week NYC, running November 11-15 across the city, so the neighborhood will be busy that week. The exhibition stays on view for eleven more weeks, through January 30, 2027. Check the gallery’s pages before you go, because hours can change.
