Short answer

Because the two galleries are co-presenting it. Pace has represented Kiki Smith since 1994, and Jeffrey Deitch hosts the exhibition in his gallery at 925 North Orange Drive. According to Pace founder Arne Glimcher, it is the first time the two galleries present an entire exhibition together. Untethered Journey runs October 30, 2026 through January 23, 2027, with an opening reception on Friday, October 30, from 6 to 8 PM.

The exhibition is a co-presentation of Jeffrey Deitch and Pace Gallery. “This is the first time that we are presenting an entire exhibition together, and the first time a collaboration of this sort is taking place in another gallery,” says Pace founder Arne Glimcher. The relationship is older than the collaboration: Deitch met Smith in 1975 and later supported A. More Store, the artist-run shop launched in 1981 under Smith’s leadership, and he included her sculpture Mother/Child (1993) — on view in this show — in Aperto ’93 at the 45th Venice Biennale. Pace began representing Smith in 1994.

What works are on view?

Early bronze sculptures such as Virgin Mary (1994) and Blood Pool (1992); works in papier mâché, beeswax, polyester resin and fiberglass; the 2002 cast aluminum and bronze series Moon on Crutches; the 1989 paper installation known as the “red room”; the cast aluminum diptych Untitled (Skin) (1992); the stained-glass installation Sybills (2005); Mother/Child (1993); recent bronze sculptures of owls and goats; and Stars and Scat (1996), a large blue field of Nepalese paper set with Schott crystal stars and bronze pellets.

What themes does the exhibition cover?

According to Pace, the show traces the interconnection of the human body and the natural world; mortality, regeneration and gender politics; and the tension between the public — a “body” of people — and the private. Smith’s sources range from eighteenth-century anatomical renderings to relics, memento mori, folklore, mythology, Byzantine iconography and medieval altarpieces. “I always think the whole history of the world is in your body,” Smith has said.
