How Do You Visit EFA Open Studios on October 9-10, 2026?
EFA Open Studios in Midtown Manhattan: public hours on October 9-10, 2026, registration, address, artist pathways and exhibitions to look at.
By Marius Pașculea
Short answer
EFA Open Studios is a free public event at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, 323 West 39th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Opening night is Friday, October 9, 2026, from 6 to 9 pm. The main Saturday studio visit runs October 10 from 1 to 6 pm, with a panel at noon and a printmaking exhibition walkthrough at 2 pm. These are New York local times.
An open art studio event lets visitors enter artists’ workspaces for a scheduled period. EFA’s program also includes exhibitions and routes through artists’ practices, so the visit can move between a workspace, a finished artwork and the context around it.

What is the difference between a studio visit and a gallery visit?
An open art studio is an artist’s workspace made accessible to visitors. At EFA, the Pathways program explicitly includes works in development as well as completed projects. That gives visitors a reason to ask about decisions, materials and changes, rather than treating everything in the room as a finished exhibition.
EFA organizes three pathways: Technologies of Resistance, Generative Repetition and Bodies of Memory. They are ways into the artists’ practices, not a requirement to see every studio. Choose a question, then follow the works that help you test it.
What can you look for in the Generative Repetition pathway?
Generative Repetition, curated by Dominika Tylcz, groups artists working with repeated marks, gestures, forms and ideas. EFA’s page illustrates it with Tamiko Kawata’s Divergence (2023), and lists Kawata among its participating artists.
A proposed looking question is: when something repeats, where does it change? Notice whether a repeated form stays regular, shifts direction or creates a different density. Then ask the artist how that decision developed. This is a suggested reading approach, not Kawata’s explanation of the artwork. The web page does not guarantee the illustrated work’s exact placement during the event.
What else is on view in the building?
On the third floor, Sarah Leahy’s Plain Sense is a site-specific wall painting in black India ink on white walls. EFA describes an image of a beech grove spanning 33 feet across two walls. It is on view September 15-December 8, 2026, curated by Deric Carner.
A second proposed question is how the image changes when it occupies a wall instead of a portable surface. Start with its scale and its relation to the room, then read the title and EFA’s description. The question is an invitation to look, not a claim about what every visitor will experience.
On the second floor, Asilah Oui: Robert Blackburn in Morocco brings together prints, photographs and ephemera from the first decade of the Asilah Cultural Moussem. EFA dates the festival’s establishment to 1978 and describes Blackburn’s role in artistic exchange through printmaking. The exhibition runs September 15-December 13, 2026. Curator Imani Congdon leads its Saturday walkthrough from 2 to 3 pm.
How do you plan the Saturday visit?
If you want the panel, arrive for its noon start on the third floor. The studios open at 1 pm. If printmaking and cultural exchange are your focus, reserve the 2-3 pm hour for the second-floor walkthrough. Otherwise, choose one pathway and leave time for conversations instead of trying to cover the entire building.
Before going, check EFA’s current registration and access information. The event page does not give enough detail to confirm step-free access or all visitor facilities; ask the organizer if these affect your visit.
For later dates, the New York October guide lists other gallery and studio visits. The WoodsWoman Method opening at the Bronx Museum is a separate Friday event, not part of EFA’s program or a promised combined route.
FAQ
Is EFA Open Studios free?
Yes. EFA lists the event as free and open to the public. The Friday professional preview is separately marked by RSVP.
Do you need to register?
EFA encourages registration for Friday opening night and requires RSVP for the professional preview. Use the organizer’s page for current registration details; do not assume the preview is unrestricted public entry.
When are the studios open on Saturday?
October 10, 2026, from 1 to 6 pm. The noon panel takes place before that studio window.
Can you visit the exhibitions after the event?
EFA lists later closing dates for Plain Sense and Asilah Oui. Those dates do not mean the artist studios remain open to the public. Check each program’s normal visiting arrangements separately.
