What is the show about?
Regen Projects describes an exhibition that “enlists and disrupts the language of formalism”: Smith uses repetition, shorthand and distortion to expose how visual systems carry power. In the new works on paper she slices and reweaves pages from her Coloring Books series — originally drawn from an activity book designed to teach children about the judicial process — into overlapping grids that break the scenes apart. The effect turns a Minimalist-looking surface into evidence of the system the source material teaches.
What is the Ferris wheel sculpture?
A Clockwork (2021), shown at the 2022 Whitney Biennial and in Smith’s 2026 survey at The Contemporary Austin, repeats the form of prison tables and stools until they become a slowly rotating Ferris wheel. Smith describes it as anchored in “the duration of time, on doing time, on banality and enclosure.” The new video skin suit (2026) collages police-chase and bodycam footage popularized by reality television, asking what happens between the images when violence is replayed as entertainment.
Why is this artist worth knowing?
Smith’s work is in the collections of MoMA, the Whitney, the Guggenheim and The Studio Museum in Harlem, among others. Her largest museum survey to date, Clockwork, runs at the FLAG Art Foundation in New York through February 13, 2027, and a first monograph follows in early 2027. This Regen Projects show is a chance to see her newest work in the city where she was born — a good moment to read up on how commercial galleries build an artist’s career alongside museum shows.
